Term 5:

Minibeasts: We looked at our pet snail Sam and learnt some interesting facts.

  1. A snail has eyes on the end of its antennae but they only tell them whether it is light or dark.
  2. A snail has 2 smaller feelers which they use to find food.
  3. Sam the snail likes to eat cucumber.
  4. Snails have a foot and can make slime.
  5. A snail has a shell which it can hide inside when it is asleep or if it is in danger.

We looked at a famous artists work called ‘The Snail'.  It was made by Henri Matisse.  We made pictures of snails in the same style by tearing squares of paper.

We were really lucky this term to have enough money left over from our early years project to invite the artist John back to Penguin Class.

This time we worked on a much larger scale and used cardboard to construct a city in the outside area. The children made different rooms, tunnels, cut doors and windows, made furniture and converted the A-frame into a rocket.

They also constructed a couple of giant spiders to live in the city.

Everyone enjoyed the day very much and worked together very well learning new techniques for strengthening and joining materials.

Term 4:

The start of Term 4 saw the reception children from Penguin and Puffin class joining with all the rising five children from Poppy pre-school for a fantastic creative day led by John Walters, a visiting artist.

John Walters

The day was divided into four sessions, each group had children from reception and pre-school. The children began by looking at and discussing images of sculptures made from all kinds of objects and materials.

The children were then presented with a host of different materials (such as shaving foam, red and white clay, play doh, cornflour dough and glitter) with which to experiment and then make their own sculptures with.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful time; the adults had great fun too!

We painted sunset cactus pictures.  We made a colour wash and then stuck the silhouette of a cactus on to the background.

These four are by Adam, Samuel M, Elis and Kelsey:
